Bariatric Surgery
The Centre for Bariatric Surgery (CBS) is one of the
leading centres in the world for LAP BAND placement for four particular
reasons:"
- Clinical Experience and Excellence - CBS was begun by Professor Paul O'Brien, one of the pioneers of the LAP BAND, in the early 1990s when the band was just starting to become available. The surgeons of the Centre have now treated over 3,500 patients, more than almost any other group in the world. We have achieved results that are as good or better than any other group.
These results have been published in numerous research papers, all of which can
be accessed through this website.

list of publications.
There have been no deaths and very few problems. It has now become an extraordinarily safe procedure. No other group can show better safety record. You would be dealing with very experienced surgeons, supported by an equally experienced team.
With a follow up of more than 97% of our patients, we know that there has been an average weight loss of approximately 30 kg. Some have lost more, some have lost less but that is the average. Along with the weight loss we have shown major improvements in health, quality of life and life expectancy.
- Research Excellence - we have studied the harmful effects of obesity, the health benefits of weight loss and the optimal care of the LAP BAND patient intensively throughout the last 12 years. This means we know as much as anyone about the best techniques of placement of the band and follow up care of the people after the procedure. The results of this research has been published extensively, far more than any other group who are using the LAP BAND procedure.
- Teaching Excellence - Nearly all the surgeons in Australia who use the LAP BAND have learnt the technique by attending one of our basic training workshop and have refreshed and enlarged their knowledge of the techniques by subsequently attending one of our Advanced treaining workshops. The surgeons and physicians of CBS have also conducted numerous workshops in the USA, Europe, South America, Mexico and the Asia Pacific region.
- We care - At the centre of our activities in CBS is the patient. We have a
commitment to provide the best and safest care to our patients, from initial contact, through the LAP BAND placement and throughout the rest of your life. You must not think of the LAP BAND as something you get off the shelf like shoes in a shop and all boxes are the same.
The best results only occur if the assessment, the education, the partnership, the operation and the follow up are optimal. We have the knowledge, the skills, the experience and the commitment to provide this for you. Your health is too important to take a chance on anything less.
